In the heart of Brisbane, the emerging design studio, J.AR Office, has transformed the traditional hair salon experience into something resembling a chic nightclub.

With stainless steel joinery, captivating lighting, and polished concrete, they've redefined the conventional salon visit. Typically, hair salons can be daunting and uncertain places, but The Disco Salon aims to change that. Architect Jared Webb of J.AR Office has designed a space with muted colors and textured planes, offering a sequence of services that make the primary concern for clients as simple as, "Can I have more champagne, please?"

Located in Stones Corner among a mix of retail spaces, The Disco stands out as an oasis of sophistication. It provides a backdrop that allows the tenant's brand and services to shine. Mikey Forster, the salon's owner and a renowned colorist, played a pivotal role in shaping the design.

The "disco room" with stainless steel joinery, cool-toned lighting, and polished concrete creates a showroom-like atmosphere. The subdued color palette sets the stage for the vibrant dyeing process, making it visible through the shopfront window.

The design is all about showcasing the artistry for passersby. Webb explains, "A salon is a public project, [but] it's also private." The minimal palette extends throughout the fitout but with variation and intrigue for those who look closely. Curious moments are created through the interplay of geometry, texture, light, and shadow.

Mirrors give the illusion of infinite reflection, and hidden nooks offer tantalizing glimpses through joinery, unveiling other spaces. These design details define distinct interior zones while introducing subtle variety.

Each zone is a blend of compression and release, optimizing functionality and luxury.

Upon entering The Disco, a narrow corridor separates guests from the outside world. It's adorned with soft coir carpet, dimmed warm-toned lighting, and the salon's signature scent. The corridor opens to a marble island bench, resembling a social space that embraces the creative chaos of color-mixing.

The design leverages pre-existing parameters and constraints to its advantage, transforming conventional elements into a sculpted, sensory space. The Disco intentionally spotlights the creativity and expertise of the salon's staff without compromising functionality or the visitor experience.

With a curated palette and a thoughtful layout, The Disco allows each individual to focus on being their best self, inside and out.
