SPACES WITHIN invited Daniel Kutlesovski to design a poetic display of its expanding collection, evoking the brand's craftsmanship and aesthetic philosophy at the 3 Days Design events in Copenhagen.
The centerpiece of the exhibition is a large, custom-built cabinet wall composed of small square panels, each showcasing a handle from the BLUNT collection. This arrangement allows visitors to observe and compare the various sizes of the handles, from small to medium, culminating in the grand addition of the final, monumental handle, weighing an impressive 1.5 kilograms. Daniel Kutlesovski emphasized that the repetition of these handles in a strict grid was inspired by the product itself and its use in daily life, aiming to create a significant visual impact.
The thoughtful design of the cabinet wall serves both as a functional display and as an artistic installation that emphasizes the collection's evolution. Each handle's placement highlights its unique characteristics, craftsmanship, and the material quality for which SPACES WITHIN is renowned. Kutlesovski mentioned that his approach to design often involves working with or against the space to create a different feeling, using materiality as a primary source of inspiration. “I usually narrow down the material palette to its minimum, to try to achieve as much as possible with as little as possible. I believe a space can be interesting without being overpowering” states Daniel.
Mirrors integrated into the space, including a hidden mirror cabinet within the wall, enhance the visual experience by creating a sense of depth and space. This clever use of reflection allows visitors to view the handles from multiple angles, appreciating the intricate details and finishes. The decision to create a spatial experience rather than a typical display was influenced by the collaborative synergy between Kutlesovski and the founders of SPACES WITHIN, Nadja and Karin. According to Daniel, there was a natural chemistry and a shared understanding of design principles, which made the project’s open brief a seamless starting point for creating this immersive environment.
Additional elements, such as minimalist aluminum display structures adorned with embroidered linen pillows, further underscore the brand's dedication to quality and aesthetic excellence. The juxtaposition of raw materials with refined finishes reflects SPACES WITHIN's poetic language and commitment to crafting sophisticated narratives around their world of products.
SPACES WITHIN has always skillfully blended sophisticated design with the language of fashion. Their subtle, analog photographs and visual style flirt with the editorial language commonly found in cultural and fashion publications like Vogue. This aesthetic approach is complemented by Daniel's extensive experience with prominent brands such as Naked and Melanie Berger. He reflects on this crossover, stating, "Fashion has always been close to heart, as the conceptual approach is the leading aspect in most cases. I see it almost as branding through interior design, where an interior concept can truly shape how a brand expresses and positions itself to its clients. While the design may be freer, it remains deeply rooted in conceptual thinking."
SPACES WITHIN is a Stockholm-based label that crafts sculptural cabinet hardware, combining sensual forms, textural finishes, and unique proportions. Each piece is a work of art, created from solid brass in a second-generation Florentine foundry, reflecting a deep passion for quality and craftsmanship. Founded by Nadja and Karin, the label believes in the healing power of beauty and the poetic connection between functional objects and their surroundings.
