Austin Voll's decision to establish his practice, Studiovoll, revolves around the philosophy that centers on the exquisite art of kanna—the Japanese hand plane with a rich history spanning 600 years.

Kanna, an integral part of traditional Japanese craftsmanship, holds a special place in Voll's creative journey. This remarkable tool, developed over centuries, embodies the essence of precision and mastery. Its steel and iron blade, meticulously crafted to taper into a fine cutting edge, possesses the ability to shear wood fibers with unparalleled finesse. The result is an impeccably smooth surface that showcases the intricate cellular structure of the tree itself.

Inspired by the legacy of kanna and its ability to impart an unmatched level of craftsmanship, Voll set out to build his practice on this ancient technique. Guided by the wisdom passed down through generations, he sought to create furniture that transcends the passage of time, captivating viewers with its timeless beauty.

By embracing the substance and essence of the wood, Voll delves into its intricate patterns, textures, and natural variations. He allows the wood to guide his creative process, unveiling its hidden beauty and bringing forth its distinct personality. The result is a collection of divers objects, tables, chairs and vessels that showcase the individuality and inherent qualities of each piece of wood.

Studiovoll, born in 2017 as a mental space within Austin Voll's art practice, evolved into a dedicated furniture studio after his apprenticeship with Toshio Tokunaga in 2018. His perspective shifted from the functionality of furniture to its role in how we live. Immersed in nature's wisdom and inspired by ancient oaks, Voll realized that furniture, like fallen trees, supports life even in death. Studiovoll, written in lowercase as a single word, signifies its growth from the land and our collective health. It encapsulates the essence of Voll's transformative journey, intertwining craftsmanship, nature, and human existence in a quest for a more harmonious future.
