MOGO by Giorgia Longoni Studio
Zuzanna Gasior
Jun 26, 2025

Tucked into the design-forward Isola district of Milan, a new establishment is gently recalibrating the city’s sensory expectations. MOGO is neither just a bar nor simply a restaurant—it’s a quietly radical hybrid that orchestrates food, music, and interiors into a singular, high-resolution experience.

The concept finds its inspiration in Japan’s storied Jazz Kissa—intimate, analog listening bars once hidden down the alleys of postwar Tokyo. In Milan, that once-niche culture has been elegantly translated and expanded. Here, a seasonal tasting menu and curated vinyl collection are served in equal measure, under the attentive curation of chef Yoji Tokuyoshi (of Bentoteca and Pan) and music specialists Polifonic and Burro Studio Records.

MOGO’s interiors, imagined by Giorgia Longoni Studio, evoke a dialogue between past and present. Softly industrial elements—exposed concrete, ductwork, grid lighting—are counterbalanced by midcentury warmth: plush velvet seating in terra-cotta tones, cabinetry in deep timber, and the luminous sheen of polished chrome. A cool grid ceiling bathes the room in white light by day; at night, it dims to a cinematic amber, in sync with the rhythm of the turntables.

A series of evocative tapestries by Andrea Marco Corvino, an Italian-South African artist, lend narrative texture. Their folkloric surrealism plays off the surrounding rawness—an interplay of ancestral memory and contemporary mood. It’s a fitting gesture for a venue named for the Sotho word Mmogo, meaning “together.” That spirit of connection—across disciplines, cultures, and sensory modes—is MOGO’s beating heart.

Nowhere is that synthesis more clearly expressed than at the bar: a full-circle centerpiece in rich wood, framed by a custom DJ booth clad in matching tones. Above, bespoke speakers—crafted by H.A.N.D. Hi-Fi in collaboration with Sound Metaphors—hover in smoky burl wood like floating sculpture, distributing sound with both elegance and authority.

Tokuyoshi’s menu follows suit, layering Japanese precision with global reach. There are remixes of izakaya classics, seasonal ingredients treated with reverence, and a generosity of spirit in both portions and plating. Meanwhile, the beverage program reaches further still: small-batch mezcals, natural wines, a reverent lineup of Japanese whiskies, and cocktails that borrow liberally from every compass point.
