Creative Studio Unravel has reimagined the retail landscape with its latest Mardi Mercredi store in Seoul’s dynamic Hannam neighborhood, creating a space where the lines between art, culture, and fashion blur, offering an immersive experience that challenges traditional shopping conventions.
Far from just a place to shop, the stores are conceived as cultural playgrounds where fashion intersects with art, music, exhibitions, and performances. Inspired by the Korean concept of ‘The Yard Party,’ the stores evoke a sense of celebration and community, blending these diverse elements into a cohesive, experiential environment.
The layout itself invites discovery. Visitors are encouraged to meander through the space, with areas thoughtfully spaced to provoke curiosity and interaction. The flow is intentionally open-ended, offering pockets of calm between more dynamic zones, creating an ebb and flow of energy. This sense of spaciousness, paired with curated programming, positions the stores not just as retail environments but as platforms ripe for creative collaboration with other brands.
A standout within this series is the Noir Mardi Mercredi Store in Seoul. Studio Unravel’s design narrative here revolves around light—both natural and artificial. The minimalist palette, dominated by soft grey tones, allows light to take center stage, while black accents in stools and frames add subtle depth without overwhelming the space. The interplay of light and shadow is further enhanced by mirrored columns that reflect and expand the sense of openness.
At the heart of the store, a spiral staircase becomes a sculptural element in its own right. With a dark, charred wood finish reminiscent of the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban technique, it punctuates the space, anchoring the design with a bold yet understated presence. This tactile materiality is echoed in smaller details throughout the store, ensuring a seamless visual dialogue between the different elements.
