Created for SCP’s collaboration with Ishinomaki Laboratory, the Ishinomaki HIROI CHAIR by London-based Industrial Facility is an exercise in simplicity, proportion, and purpose.
Crafted from western red cedar, the chair honours the raw dimensions of its material, avoiding unnecessary cuts or embellishment. Its geometry is guided by practical considerations — stability, comfort, and a reassuring sense of security. Slightly wider than it is deep, the form keeps its centre of gravity subtly forward, ensuring a poised stance.
A single steel tube curves gently to form the backrest — a quiet gesture that nods to the rounded contours of the human body. The result is both structural and sculptural, lending the piece an elegance that belies its straightforward construction.
Designed for compact living, the Ishinomaki Chair tucks neatly beneath counters and small tables, making it as adaptable as it is enduring. It is a chair that holds its ground without demanding attention — modest, honest, and deeply attuned to the spaces it inhabits.
