The Vagar Country House by David Bilo and Filipe Pina

The Vagar Country House is the owners' long-held dream, a place where years of longing, experience, and intuition shaped something deeply personal and lasting.

After years of working in tourism, they had a desire for something of their own—a place shaped by their values, where hospitality could be natural and effortless. When the land they had always admired finally went up for sale, they knew it was time and acted immediately. They didn’t just buy a plot; they embraced a landscape—a rolling hill of Serra da Esperança that feels expansive, open, full of possibility.

Rather than impose a vision, they worked with what was there, collaborating with architects David Bilo and Filipe Pina to carefully modernize the space and turn it into a nature inspired boutique hotel. The original 'Casa da Chandeirinha' and its neighboring buildings weren’t reinvented but gently restored. Granite masonry holds the weight of history, while exposed concrete, thermo-treated wood, and natural zinc bring a quiet modernity. The result is a home that feels both authentic and thoughtfully updated.

The Vagar isn’t about curated perfection—it’s about stepping into something bigger than yourself. Trails wind through the land, leading nowhere in particular but always somewhere beautiful. The hot tub sits out in the open, with nothing but sky above. A modest restored chapel offers a quiet pause, while the swimming pool stretches toward breathtaking distant views. A dedicated wellness space provides a quiet retreat, keeping things simple and natural.

Luxury here isn’t defined by excess. It’s found in space, stillness, and the kind of hospitality that feels effortless. Mornings start with unhurried coffee, evenings end with the sound of the wind moving through the trees - It’s a place to settle in, take in the surroundings.
