Situated between the gothic Saint Laurens cathedral and the Delftsevaart canal, Theater Podium Grotekerkplein designed by Atelier Kempe Thill was formed only during the course of the modernist reconstruction of the city center, which was almost entirely destroyed during WW2.
"The main landmarks of the Grotekerkplein are the gothic Saint Laurenskerk, the statue of Erasmus and the Delftsevaart canal. Currently the square has a rather unattractive and run-down look, due to the fact that most buildings surrounding the square do not face it. To stimulate activities and emphasize the spatial qualities of the square a podium for open air festivals is erected. The podium is designed as a window towards the city. The horizontal building is functioning as a counterpart to the church tower, reinforces the edge of the square and underlines the transition between the square and the canal. The podium can be used for different cultural events but also has a spatial function without being used." — Atelier Kempe Thill
