Created by Group Projects Architecture, House in a Meadow is a calm retreat on a 30-acre property in Millerton, New York, where the black-clad main house and guest house sit quietly within a sweeping meadow, open to views of the Catskills to the west and sheltered by an intimate ridge to the east, inviting a gentle connection to the landscape.
In deference to the setting, the home and guest house are clad in black corrugated metal, a choice that tempers the buildings’ presence, allowing the textures of meadow and ridge to remain the focus. The material’s subtle wave adds a quiet rhythm to the façade, while exposed rafters and expansive glass openings soften the structure, framing views to the meadow and ridge from within.
The floor plan centers on balance and ease. A central hall anchors the design, leading to private bedrooms to the north and communal spaces to the south. The kitchen, dining, and living spaces feature four Douglas fir-clad millwork volumes that serve as functional dividers, lending warmth and defining the room’s boundaries. The gabled ceiling in the main living area introduces a gentle vault, softened at the edges to catch daylight, creating a sense of openness that feels both connected and calming.
Large sliding glass doors open both east and west, connecting directly to the landscape. The meadow-facing terrace and a secluded outdoor dining space nestled against the ridge further extend the home’s living areas into the surroundings, with the nearby pool and guest house offering a peaceful retreat amidst the grasses.
