The new transparent campus designed by SANAA will open the Bocconi University to the city of Milan, with arcades creating a harmonious sequence of columns and open spaces.
The university will be completely open to the city containing elements of transparency and greenery. Developed for the context and scale of the city, it revisits the arcades and cloisters found in the surrounding architecture, translated into modern typologies. This creates a series of internal courtyards that allow for smooth transitions between buildings and the park.
The 35,000 square meter area will undergo three major interventions. The first is the combination of the school of management into three buildings, combining the activities of these programs. The second is the development of a sports and leisure complex, which will be open to the public with an olympic-size swimming pool, gym, and fitness center. The third is a residence hall that can accommodate up to 300 students and professors.
A 21,500 square meter park will outline the surrounding territory with oak, hornbeam, black poplar, elm and hackberry trees to shade the properties. The opaque shell is communicating the concept of movement and knowledge in this future urban institute.
