Located amidst the verdant surroundings in Darmstadt's city center, Atelier Haack by Florian Krieger Architektur presents an interesting fusion of architectural creativity and environmental sensitivity.
This three-story studio tower demonstrates a thoughtful design approach that harmoniously integrates the building into its natural surroundings while catering to the needs of the artist.
The orientation of Atelier Haack plays a crucial role in its unique design. The entrance faces the residential house to the north, while the two upper floors open up to the west, offering captivating views of the landscape. This rotation establishes a quarter-circle plan, giving the building a structural dynamic that is both functional and visually appealing.
Atelier Haack comprises three levels, each designed with the artist's working process in mind and featuring distinct atmospheres. The ground floor functions as storage and entrance space, while the first floor serves as an assembly or workshop room. The second floor houses the primary workspace, complete with floor-to-ceiling sliding door glazing that provides a spectacular lookout to the west.
One of the key aspects of the project was the choice of an element-based construction method, mainly using solid wood. This decision was made due to the tight time frame for completion and ecological construction considerations. The result is a building that not only seamlessly blends with its surroundings in terms of design but also in its materiality.
The multi-layered plaster facade of Atelier Haack features an intriguing detail: dome-shaped depressions are milled at regular intervals, giving the building envelope depth and plasticity. This subtle touch enhances the overall aesthetics and adds an element of refinement to the structure.
