Atelier 22, designed collaboratively by Atelier Mura Scala and Atelier Mas, is an ambitious project that revitalizes a 19th-century artist studio, restoring its forgotten charm while seamlessly blending modern design sensibilities.
Nestled within the iconic Montmartre neighborhood, the rehabilitation unveils the soul of the space by peeling back layers of time—particularly the heavy alterations imposed during the 1970s—to rediscover the studio's original materials and celebrate its sweeping volumes.
The design vision was clear: to establish harmony across the studio’s expansive three levels, crafting fluidity and cohesion in a space once fragmented. Platforms were redesigned, staircases reimagined, and ceiling heights recalibrated to create a seamless dialogue between levels. The result is an open, interconnected environment where spaces flow into one another effortlessly—free from partitions or doors.
Central to this restoration was the celebration of authenticity. Original wooden beams, long hidden, were revealed and delicately stained with a soft blue wash, offering a subtle interplay between heritage and modernity. The raw brick walls were carefully cleaned and revitalized, preserving their aged texture and warmth. Newly introduced elements, crafted from pale, light-toned wood, complement the historic framework, creating a balanced contrast that feels both timeless and contemporary.
