Architecture Project is a multidisciplinary practice based between Malta and UK. With architecture, master planning, interior design, restoration theory & practice, sustainable architecture, engineering services, education and publishing in the company's core, the office operates in the group of around 50 professionals in order to bring complex design solutions.
Villa Castro, located in Naxxar, Malta, is an example of Architecture Project’s thoughtful approach, refurbished in collaboration with architect Jens Bruenslow. The architects took demanding challenge to extend a 18th century villa located in the centre of the island and adjust it to the needs of a modern family.
As the architects were dealing with the historic construction they met various restoration difficulties. Yet, they managed to preserve the old building and safely build a new volume on it, carrying a new meaning.
„All new extensions were conceived as simple volumes and are defined and positioned to compliment, and coexist with the existing building. They are treated in such a way as to allow maximum light on the inside while retaining a monolithic appearance from the outside in sympathy with the old building. Although almost entirely glazed, this is achieved by means of a dense wooden screen, creating a composition based on the contrast of materiality,” the architects explain.
