A-um is a Japanese architectural practice, established and led by Taketo Tashiro.
Presented project, A SAKE Brewery Addition, is an improvement of more than 100 years old brewery complex, located in Fukuoka, Japan. The aim was to update already existing complex, consisting of numerous buildings and add new facilities to enhance the quality of the production. The team of a-um built a new addition part, which they connected to the historical buildings. The main focus was to create a functional structure with clear and simple shapes.
"Since the traditional complex creates its silhouette with the triangular roof shape, the new volume was intended to be overlapped with triangular-shaped geometries to cast a new look in modern way. The concrete surface and structure possess this strong feeling both visually and spatially. The new addition is constructed with a cast-in-place concrete structure, and the entire building is covered with its concrete texture as an exterior and interior finish,” explained the architects.
