Sanjo Hokusei Community Center is located in Sanjo-cho – an old residential area of Takamatsu, Kagawa. As the neighbourhood around the site is surrounded by many alleys, the main idea was to create a central space of the environs, encouraging locals to get together. To create an outstanding architectural arrangement and not to interfere the local architecture by designing one big building, the Community Centre was designed as two separated small constructions.
The space is divided into a meeting room and a space for 'other' functions. Between them, there is a transparent linkage which facilitates communication and looks as an interesting architectural element. By shaping the space in this way architects wanted to introduce more light into the interiors. Clear and simple inner space is predominated by the wooden ceiling, which shows the construction of the building. Small space is enlarged by using light materials and white walls which contrast with the dark grey facade.
Subdued unassuming materials and simple form make the building standing out against the background and encourages to spend time in it. As architects conclude: “The result was modest but symbolic community center, to which local people would feel attachment for long.”
