Once the artist Ward Roberts was about to release his new photo series Flotsam, he knew who to turn, as to close the project into fine book. A limited-edition publishing house headquartered in Los Angeles Atelier Éditions made out Ward’s work in print exquisitely well.
Ward Roberts is an Australian photographer, living and working in the city of New York. Fascinated by dimensionality, fragility, and narrative omission, the artist wandered around abstracted sunbathers upon New York’s canicular Far Rockaway Beach as to create the portrait of a place. This is how Flotsam was born.
These faded-colored, overloaded with silence and void, and perfectly composed photographs can serve as a portrait of anonymous beach. Yet, this soothing view is juxtaposed with ponderous building, constructions sites, same breaking down vertical composition of the picture, introducing a feeling of anxiety and making one think about the natural environment and its accelerating absorption by the modern culture. Ward’s art fulfills the aesthetic experience at the same time raising questions, provoking discussion.
