Studio ilio is a London-based design studio with a particular focus on material research. RCA graduates, Seongil Choi and Fabio Hendry are two creative minds standing behind its formation.
In order to challenge and alter existing manufacturing processes and material uses, they are driven to seek alternative environments and explore the boundaries between crafts and industry.
Presented project Soft Side of Steel is a great example of their beliefs. Fabio and Seongi created a stunning compilation of steel’s characteristics as a result of questioning what the forms of steel are, what are its states and where do we encounter the material.
Through thorough research into fabrication processes and study of material property of steel, the duo developed steel-fabric utilises unique ‘resistance welding’ techniques, in order to create structural elements, where welds allow areas to revert back to steel’s natural solid form. The designers combined their artistic sensibility with various manufacturing processes within the steel and textile industry, from traditional felting to transform the steel fibres into a soft flexible textile to applying welding techniques. This unique, yet experimental approach resulted in a completely new process of making and contributed to the development of new welding techniques.
It follows that presented collection of vases, containers and stools emphasizes an aesthetic approach of an exposed technique. Although, the designers are looking for future collaborators to further examine the potential applications of this hybrid material.
