Japanese photographer Shin Nogouchi describes his photography as an attempt to capture extraordinary moments of excitement, beauty, and humanism among the flow of everyday life.
In his project called Nonverbal Space, Shin tries to visualize an unusual and unstable inner feeling, which in Japanese culture is named Ma. The word Ma is a Japanese expression which can be translated as a gap, space, pause or a space between two structural parts.
Ma is not a substance, it is an emotion that takes place in the imagination of the human experiencing such internal survival. Although it may seem, that Ma is a negative space, Shin looks at it from his own perspective.
"Ma is very beautiful, also delicate, and if you are not always aware of the very small amount of undulation of Ma, it loses balance immediately. I tried to listen to a lump of the invisible voice of Ma existing in nonverbal spaces of our daily lives, and I aimed to visualize it,” explained Shin.
