For the Revolution by Keith Yahrling-
"The boundary of the United States of America’s original thirteen colonies encompasses roughly the country’s entire eastern coast—from Maine to Georgia and from the shores of the Atlantic Ocean to the Appalachian Mountains. It is within this historically significant boundary that the American Revolution was staged and is the area of concentration for my project, For the Revolution. During this significant moment, the great majority of people were awakening to their natural born rights of liberty and freedom. However, these ideals are complex and their definitions depend on the circumstances of the individual. Because of this, the history of our democracy has been a contest between different individuals striving to define their freedom. My photographs look to illustrate the ways that Americans currently define their individual notions of freedom and the impact their decisions have on the contemporary landscape.

I was raised in the small town of National Park, which sits along the banks of the Delaware River in Southern New Jersey and is contained within the boundaries of the colonies. National Park’s only notable landmark, the Red Bank Battlefield Park, still contains the trenches of Fort Mercer. A bloody battle was waged here during the Revolution and as a child, I frequently explored these grounds. Similar to the landscapes that I explore, my father’s history and memory have been profoundly shaped by war. As a veteran of the Vietnam War, the experience has deeply penetrated his psyche, but he rarely speaks about his tour of duty. My father’s inability to speak of his experience in Vietnam and my childhood explorations of Fort Mercer have left me with many questions about how freedom is defined. From those unanswered questions, an intense curiosity has grown to understand how ideals of freedom function in our American landscape. My pilgrimage through America’s original thirteen colonies represents both a desire to understand the democratic roots of my country and my own personal heritage, because the two are inseparable from each other."

Keith Yahrling is a photographer currently living and working in Providence, Rhode Island. He is a 2013 MFA in photography candidate at the Rhode Island School of Design and has plans to relocate to his native city, Philadelphia, this July. He has recently exhibited work at the Siskind Gallery at the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, New York, the Sol Koffler Gallery in Providence, Rhode Island and is scheduled to participate in a group show at Clampart in Chelsea this July. He was recently awarded a Graduate Studies Grant that will allow him to pursue his current body of work, For the Revolution, as well as a National Conference Student Award from the Society for Photographic Education and the T.C. Colley Scholarship for Excellence in Photography.

The new collection of Grain-
"The whole collection, which includes our Dish tables, Stitch mirrors, and Stick candle holders, are all made in our studio here on Bainbridge Island or in partnership with small US manufacturers."

Grain is a practice dedicated to social and environmental responsibility. The work of partners Chelsea Green and James Minola unites current manufacturing technologies and age-old craft techniques. Goods are produced in small batch runs at their island studio or through special collaborations with expert artisans in the US and abroad.

LAVA Lemonade by Ola Mirecka-
"LAVA lemonade is a playful space based on childhood dreams. It is a manifestation of my design language based on taking illustration into three dimensions. I invited you to drink specially made lemonade from handmade cups, sit on unique chairs, pop lemonade balloons, talk and meet new friends.

LAVA was inspired by an Icelandic experience where I made my first lemonade cooled down with the ice from the glacier. The context is one of extremes, intended to create a very strong, immersive and uncontrolled experience.

LAVA structures: bar, kitchen, stools, bench and ladder are made out of metal wire welded and bent in drawing like combinations and than powder coated. The cups, which fit into the cup rail, are made out of jesmonite – non toxic, water based resin. All the fabrics and prints are made with collaboration with Natalia Maghdoori, textile designer."

Mundane Things A/W 13 by MIUNIKU-
"Mundane things is a project that aims to make mundane, daily things exciting to the viewer. This Design project explores the aspect of the processes involved in our daily chores and focuses on the monotony of our daily routines. ‘Even though the presence of these activities are dense much though is not given them, for this is a world we would normally regard as too prosaic to be worthy of notice.’ (Moran J, 2008)

Therefore, we aimed to find interest in un - noticed things that we repeatedly use in our everyday life that have no significance in an un obvious way to make it admirable/ significant through or in the context of clothing. It is almost like going back to the basics. We first started out by seeing how people hang clothes to dry on a clothes line (the juxtaposing of a garment and the way its hung). Also the process of folding a shirt and how it looks. We experimented with layering our own garments on a clothes line as well as on a mannequin, which gave many ideas for details.

The research touches upon household chores such as doing the laundry, washing the dishes, folding and organising clothes and mundane, repetitive factory jobs. The colours come from cleaning products such as washing powder/sponges and other plastic household items. The fabrics used range from jerseys, wools, silks and organdy. The silhouettes are a bit oversized yet straight. The overall design aesthetic is a play between clean lines and graphic details."

TP-H Residence by Jermyn Manthripragada Architecture-
"The project is the addition of a dining room, reading room and two bedroom suites to an existing 1948 adobe-brick house. Careful consideration was given to the siting of the new addition and its relationship to existing trees, the original house and a previous addition completed by JM-A in 2011 (a writing studio called the ‘Box Office’). It employs the material and formal language developed for the Box Office: spare, platonic boxes of a perceptual mass detailed precisely at their junctions to openings with a material thinness.

Four volumes control view and orchestrate movement through their various internal and external alignments. The reading of the solid/void relationship oscillates between additive and subtractive processes--on the one hand understood as a series of connected volumes while on the other seen as an initially pure box from which two L-forms are removed. The result is a rhythmic reciprocity between interior space and garden. A strangeness of scale, already present on the suburban site with an unusually large garden and mature trees, is embraced in the addition as well. A low horizontal window, for example, adjacent to the bath in the master suite, has an uncanny presence at its exterior condition through its positional ambiguity."

Written in their Karma by James Edwin Bettney-
"These images represent over 3 years of exploration into the lives of women in Nepal who face an intolerable struggle due to long standing social and religious conformity within the national community. In Nepal a widow is looked upon with great animosity. It is believed that the actions in their previous life contribute to the death of their husband. They have therefore been ostracised for generations, losing their status in both the home and society.

This work could not have been completed without the cooperation of WHR-SWG (Women for Human Rights - Single Women’s Group) whose dedicated and persistent campaigning has not only been the catalyst for real and palpable change within Nepal but is now extending it’s caring arms to protect the single women that are affected throughout the entirety of South Asia."

Sea Blues by Yael Malka and Cait Oppermann-
Brooklyn-based artists Cait Oppermann & Yael Malka backpacked for 70 days this past year and created a book of photographs taken over the course of that time. They traveled through Turkey, Morocco and several countries in Europe and returned to compile the book, which is called Sea Blues. Here is an excerpt from the book's statement:

"Throughout the trip, the only consistent form of structure was the company of one another. Time became elastic and weeks departed from what our knowledge of what a “week” meant. As a result, we have collected an array of photographs which emote our sense of constant displacement yet express a deep love of travel and discovery. Upon returning home, the reality of our trip ceased to exist, yet we came back with these images as proof of our “experience.” The photographs themselves are a kind of evidence of our disorientation."

Casas Reais by Concheiro de Montard-
"Lighting up spaces: Our first aim was to be able to comprehend the existing house, a space fragmented in small rooms with little light, to then visualize it as one single premise full of light. With this concept in mind, we decided to use the most out of its lighting possibilities using the two existing natural light sources in the house. The gallery facing north and three small openings on the east and west sides located on the thick stone walls. On one side, the house extends to the gallery embracing the sun light and the views of the old town. On the other side, the small existing windows are perceived as a whole, creating a space with pleasant and changing brightness throughout the day.

Densifying the space: Under this new concept, the house is conceived as a collection of spaces with specific character. All laid out in a continuous way so they can benefit from the confluence of the different sources of light. The rooms become visible due to the articulations and expansions of the space through furniture design. In this way, the room is always acting as the foreground leaving the following rooms as second and third backgrounds, which give density and depth to the space.

The furniture harmonizes and allows to a continuous perception of the space. The existing stone wall, with its lime mortar texture, it is shown to its fullest, connecting the living room – kitchen – master bed room in a sequence of spaces. The new and continuous carpentry work, smooth and satin finished, organizes the living room – entrance – dressing room – study room sequence.

Objects trouves: Three existing pieces act as objects trouvés interacting with the new elements and giving to the dwelling its own character. The lareira, traditional Galician stone fire-place, turns into a resting place in the study room. The original kitchen´s hydraulic tiles are rearranged creating a tapestry which extends throughout the new space in the kitchen. The wooden gallery integrates visually with the interior space through the new carpentry work, which serves as a filter between the indoor and outdoor environments."

Södrakull Frösakull by Daniel Carlsten-
"In his book Södrakull Frösakull, the artist Mikael Olsson explores the legacy of the late designer and architect Bruno Mathsson through two buildings that Mathsson once designed and lived in. The project raises questions about memory, time and transience, and depicts the relationship between man, nature and architecture in a series of images created from experimentation and voyeurism.

The same concepts and methodology have also dictated the terms in the design process of the book. The book design reflects the photography and the architecture’s balance between the beautiful and the non-perfect, enhancing Mikael Olsson’s artistic intentions with the goal of defining the book as an independent work alongside Mathsson’s creations."
