American photographer Penn Chan attended the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies and received his BA from Bard College in creative writing. Penn is particularly interested in documentary photography, capturing the surroundings from his own point of view.
Presented project, titled Hard Water is an outcome of Penn’s personal observation of Maine, a state found in the nation of United States, presenting a harsh environment for human settlement.
The project raises many questions and makes one think about the community, that choose to spend their winters exploring the wild enviroment of Maine. The emotions of fear, blended with fascination and allure are revealed in Penn’s approach to visualize the state of mind, one can hardly imagine without experiencing it.
