Portuguese innovative architecture practice NOARQ is located in Porto and Trofa. In their practice they apply a multidisciplinary approach in their broad range of works, aiming for the improvement of the quality of human life.
Presented project, titled Mami House, is a single family building situated in the picturesque Portugal city Matosinhos, just north of Porto. The story of the construction began when José Carlos Nunes de Oliveira, the leader of the architecture studio, was commissioned by clients to design a house on a very tight budget, where everybody finds comfort. Although NOARQ had to face various difficult challenges, at the end they wonderfully managed to fulfill the customers’ dreams.
In order to minimize costs, they decided to invest in energy efficiency, rather than using a wide variety of finishing materials. Natural concrete walls were implemented inside while on the outside a thick thermal insulation component system was utilized. The arrangement of the interior design involves an open plan on the lower floor with a convenient solution of a circulation. The staircase, which is placed in the middle of the house, serves as a divider between the rooms on both the lower and upper level. To separate the social and the private areas, the kitchen or the living room are located on the ground level and three bedrooms and a bathroom were placed upstairs. To soften the rawness of the concrete and lend the house a feeling of coziness, the interior design was balanced by wooden materials, featured all over the building. Carrying the characteristics of perfect balance between harmony and structure, the cuboid-shaped house hopefully will serve the family for the rest of their lives.
