American contemporary photographer Missy Prince was born and raised in Gulfport, Mississippi, and she currently lives at the other side of the states in Portland, Oregon.
In the ongoing series, titled Last Fair Deal, the artist started visually cataloguing her home state with an exploratory mindset. The essence of the series couldn’t be better expressed than by the artist’s own words.
“To love a place from a distance is to embellish it with memory, desire, and myth. Why Last Fair Deal is a fantasy, a lyric, and a document of one of several returns to my home state of Mississippi. It is part of an ongoing exploration of a South that is both familiar and strange, both real and imagined,” she explains. The photographs visually depict the seemingly void and calm surroundings of Mississippi, while giving a peek into Missy’s contemplation of contrary emotions. The series is a perfect mixture of objective documentation of the landscape combined with portraits, radiating a strong presence.
