After gaining experience abroad, Manuel Cachão Tojal established his own namesake architectural practice in Lisbon in 2014. Managing Manuel Tojal Architects, the architect keeps on to make an architecture that simply seeks the essence of the subject.
In 2015 the team of Manuel Cachão Tojal completed a house in Chanca, Portugal.
This newly designed mansion stands on a valley on top of a rock, as a replacement of a former building which remained in a ruin. The ruin serves as a shell, where the inside is created in a new volume of wood that forms the program. The big window of the living area beside its basic functions also allows to increase the inner area and beautifully introduces natural light in. The space is almost totally fulfilled with wood which covers the ceiling, interior walls, doors and windows, aiming to build contrast with the cold of the existing stone walls.
