Barcelona-based artist Rosa Rubio is a creator of Los Objetos Decorativos, the items that surprisingly well merge the heritage of avant-garde manifestos with contemporary design.
Those curious objects stand in-between design, installation, and sculpture. Though Rosa's minimalistic design items do not serve for any real usage.
“Los Objetos Decorativos are the language between beings and objects. To provide objects with a soul, so that everything around us feels recognizable and becomes a comfortable space to be in. Objects should meet our needs and ambitions. If we create an emotional link, a sense of admiration and visual connection with the things we share our time with, they will reflect our lifestyle, our character and even our habits. Los Objetos Decorativos have no function as such, the user shall come up with it as and when necessary.”
Despite the fact that Los Objetos Decorativos have no separate names for each item, but just numbers, Rosa is creating special emotional value for each of her works. She follows the theory established by the surrealist movement focused on the analysis of the phenomenon of a surreal thing. The surreal object is the recreation of the utile item taken away from everyday usage. The collages, unexpected associations or intuitive matching of well-known pieces were constructing new meanings and a new imaginary reality. The surreal object is a being that brings symbolic connotation, appears as a mysterious organism living its secret life.
Rosa Rubio emphasizes similar aspects of the existence of material things as surrealists did. The designer is searching for unexpected connotations, shapes, and mixtures. Los Objetos Decorativos are self-manufactured. Any material imperfection is unique and should be seen as an added value to the object.
