Lisbon-based architectural practice Filipe Mónica Arquitectos was established by Filipe Mónica. Since its formation in 2011, the studio takes on new challenges, welcoming collaborations, as well as commissions, delivering high-quality results.
Presented project, named Tap building, is a renovation of an apartment built in the late 19th century. The construction received a major refurbishment before, directed by the architect Raul Chorão Ramalho in the 50s, which resulted in a modern outcome. The time has come for a new chapter of the renovation process, which called for a contemplation on the past designs. The architectural studio didn’t want major changes which would intervene with the previous layouts of the house, therefore they strived for balance and harmony between the former looks of the building to get the desired results.
“Keeping the housing use, five building units with five different typologies were carefully designed, and new common spaces were set-up. Based on a premise of balance and accuracy-drawing, detail and meticulous construction, all the current operation converges into a fundamental principle: the architectural achievement of a single object, in which the three times merge together in a natural way, and in harmony with the more relevant features offered by both a renewed program and an extraordinary site,” shared the architects.
In order to create a simplistic outcome, a basic, but harmonizing material palette was used, which includes white concrete walls balanced by the warmth of wood. Adding to the experience, the exquisite, extensive windows allow the inhabitant to experience the views of the beautiful Lisbon street.
