COBE is a Copenhagen-based community of architects working on a variet scale projects, all implemented with „adaptability to the local context, its social life and its users”, as stated by the studio.
One of the most significant and recognizable work of COBE is Frederiksvej Kindergarten. A project created on the ruins of demolished small daycare institution for 30 children in Frederiksberg, Denmark. With the volume of six times bigger as the former building, the new complex designed by COBE serves as a the biggest daycare institution in the Copenhagen neighborhood of Frederiksberg.
„The starting point for this kindergarten was to create a building from the eye level of a child. Therefore, the design is based on a concept that kids are very fond of: the playhouse, with the appearance based on a simplistic child’s drawing,” the architects describe. Following the inspiration, the architects set 11 small houses joint together with different orientations. In a result a scaled down environment of many different worlds was created in order to serve pupils needs. As the team of COBE summarizes: „Frederiksvej Kindergarten is a place where children can feel a sense of belonging to one specific house within the cluster of houses.”
