Barcelona-based architecture office ARQUITECTURA-G was found by Jonathan Arnabat, Jordi Ayala-Bril, Aitor Fuentes and Igor Urdampilleta in 2006. Ever since then, they accomplished various splendid projects in the range of architecture and interior design.
Presented below is a refurbishment of a country house in Empordà, Girona, Spain completed by the team of ARQUITECTURA-G in 2015. The house is located in the outskirts of a village in Empordà, the natural and historical region of Catalonia. The great value of the location is the spectacular surroundings of fields and fruit gardens. The architects took up the challenge to redefine the existing space and transform it into a full of light spacious place of relaxing.
The architects optimised the use of the layout, creating more useful convenient space. As they say: “The project starts by fusing the volume using an existing patio in the first floor and opening a new one in the second. The last one opens two large spaces in the centre of the house that are conceived as the entrance hall and the swimming pool.“
Hence, only the main structure and the exterior wall of the building left maintained. Through introducing new courtyards and window openings, the interior aims to interconnect each rooms, as well as exterior and inner space.
The whole volume was made of stone, broken white giving the neutral image. The brown glazed coloured tiles common in this neighbourhood creates a continuous dialogue with the adjacent buildings. “The result is a house where one could live without the need to leave it. The landscape floods the interior through the windows and an inner labyrinth of rooms and courtyards sets off spaces to work, eat, rest, read, swim …” - the architects conclude.
