With a backround in philosophy, artist Arjan Janssen uses his deep, thoughtful background to create pure art works.
Originally, Arjan started to nourish his skills at the Art Academy Sint Joost in Breda, however, after two years, he decided to quit and started to attend the University of Amsterdam, where he studied philosophy. Although, this experience helped him to increase interaction of all the aspects of intellectual life, he decided to go back to Breda and give a second try to the art school. "With friends, I organized cultural activities in the squatting scene. I also sang in a punk-hardcore band. In all these adventures, art school was skimpy and simply put off. A reason to quit. In addition, I was also very opinionated,” explains the reason of quitting his studies Arjan.
The combination of Arjan’s free spirited personality, philosophical and artistic knowledge is disclosed in his minimal works. One could think, such a simple works don’t carry deep thoughts or emotions, although, when you look closer, it gives you the opportunity to see its complexity and mystery. In addition to presented selection of drawings, Arjan also makes paintings and graphics. His arrangements are always balanced, held in muted or dark colors, accompanied by geometric elements and clean lines which contribute to the total harmony of the actual work. "It is the most basic way to approach a blank sheet or canvas,” added Arjan.
