Working in between two cities, Paris and London, photographer Alex Cretey attempts to visualise Reality Principle, a term derived from psychology, that compels people to defer gratification when necessary due to the obstacles of reality.
Fascinated by this mechanism, Alex decided to create a visual narration, so-called Le Principe de Réalité in French.
In Freudian psychology and psychoanalysis, Reality Principle is the opposition of the principle of pleasure. It is the faculty of the mind to extract from dreams or hallucination, to admit reality, satisfying or not, as being there. As children, we behave by obeying only the pleasure principle, aiming to satisfy our cravings. In order to be mature, we must sacrifice childlike manners.
