Aires Mateus is an architecture bureau with the headquarters in Lisbon. The founders, Manuel and Francisco Aires Mateus are both practitioners architects-practitioners, but also spread their skills and knowledge as lecturers in the world’s best universities.
The presented project was created by this talented duo, in the historical part of one of the most picturesque towns in the west of Portugal – Alcobaça. The architects undertook the demanding task to reconstruct the old building and blend the new form with the surrounding, historical buildings. This challenging requirement has been solved by Manuel and Francisco with a spectacular outcome. The architects created a contemporary and pure project with a large respect for history and tradition.
The extension of the house was held on two grounds – the street level and the garden. The main idea was to create an enormous coherent wall, which would close up the whole lot. This continuous white line smoothly links to the house and circumscribes the vivid green of the backyard. The architects reinterpreted the form of existing window openings and proposed a solution which allows connecting with inner space quickly. Another intervention was introduced through creating a void in the old building, thus opening up the area and letting natural light in. Similarly, an intimate and private area was created. The interiors predominated with shades of white and marble create refreshing and chill atmosphere.
