Ahndraya Parlato is a visual artist born in Kailua, Hawaii. She graduated from Bard College, NY with B.A. in photography and received MFA from California College of the Arts. Her work has been appreciated by various acclaimed institutions including New York Foundation for the Arts, Magenta Foundation Emerging Photographer Award and Paul Huf Award.
Presented project, titled A Spectacle and Nothing Strange is a photography series closed in a form of a fine book published in 2016.
While working on the project, Ahndraya was exploring the way our mind works and produce innumerable abstract pictures at all time. Alike in dreams and daydreams. The set draws on the artist's experience being raised by a single mother who was mentally ill. From and early age, she was put in the unique position of having to decide whether her mother's observations and fears were real or imagined. These photographs allow her to move between various realities, acknowledging the validity of her mother's world, while also questioning the boundaries of normal, abnormal, sane, and insane.
