AFGH is a widely appreciated architectural studio based in Zurich, Switzerland. A few years ego, in this same exact city, the experienced team of this acclaimed practice, completed a project of double single-family houses, which we presents below.
The project contains of three volumes, two houses and open common space including wellness area. The orientation of the buildings was conditioned by thorough analysis taking into account the most optimal visual axes and vantage points, as well as specific of double-sided orientation of the houses. Those technical aspects merged by the team of AFGH with their immense sense of a form, resulted in intriguing, yet practical architectural objects. “A sculptural quality is generated, lending the buildings plasticity and a certain lightness. The form and the expression of the buildings therefore aim to fulfill both contextual and formal aspects”, they describe.
Despite both houses are separate objects, they are linked by a footpath through the garden, shared underground garage and wellness located beneath the ground. Coming into the house, one can admire its open space plan and wide openings facing the landscape. “The polygonal form of the floor plan enables a differentiated spatial distribution. This means that the living areas are arranged around the orthogonally organised circulation cores. The rooms between these orthogonal structures and the folded progression of the facade form a spatial continuum that extends onwards to the upper storeys”, architects say. Going down the stairs, there is an underground passage leading to the common parts. 15-metre-long pool, bathroom/WC, a steam bath and a sauna are a place of relaxation and a real gateway.
The whole architecture, both common and private areas amaze with the richness of materials. Solid concrete construction of the buildings, along with the ash-wood elements, smooth outer concrete surface and white finishes form an atmosphere that radiates comfort and cosiness.
