Adam Kane established his own namesake architecture firm in 2015, after a career expanding 10 years while working as an architect for several acclaimed offices. Presented below, the Blackwood Studio is a dwelling dedicated to an artist, located in regional Victoria, Australia. Designed as two separate structures, the studio provides space for painting as well as gallery, and garage. The structure situated around already existing house, creates a common open space between the buildings, while keeping privacy to the front of the house.
The architects of Adam Kane Architects positioned the painting studio in close proximity to the existing home, as to provide a sense of separation without isolation. An very important factor of the positioning was direction of sunlight, which influences greatly on owner’s artistic practice.
The outcome of the structure is a modern interpretation of typical rural house perfectly blended into the landscape. With its gable roofs evoking the typical historic barn form as well as cement sheet cladding and corrugated metal used as a construction referring to past generation’s construction methods, the Blackwood Studio became a coherent part of rural neighborhood.
The inner space kept simple, devoid of ornaments and details, creates a minimal white aesthetic serving as a perfect frame for the holder’s artistic practice. The architects’ idea for designing lighting in the inner space is particularly worth describing. They designed the integrated LED strip light at the ceiling’s ridge resembling a thin slice of sunlight, creating enchanting space, devoid of redundant decorative light fixtures.
